Compton hits a bullseye with new Target

Tuesday Oct 9, 2007 marked the opening of Compton's first Target. The celebration included performances by the Compton High School marching band, cheerleaders and dance squad, the Compton Children's Choir, and Brothers in Harmony, an all male singing group.

The Mayor and council members were in attendance, as well as hundreds of Compton's citizens, who were eager to start the shopping frenzy. The support shown by all in attendance was a great sign. It shows us how badly we've wanted to be able to shop in our own backyard. When the shopping started, it seemed to take mere seconds before all the carts vanished from their stalls. The isles were congested like the 405 freeway. Where I would usually think to myself, "This place is too packed right now." the congestion in Target was beautiful. The check out lines, although full, moved quickly enough that you didn't feel like you were in line forever. I was greeted by more Target associates on that day than I'd ever been greeted before at any other Target.

Seeing someone I know personally shopping in Compton was a shock to me. I've seen many people I know or recognize from my neighborhood in the Lakewood and Cerritos malls, but never this close to home. Seeing them gave me the feeling of a tight knit community, a closeness I'd never felt before, and I loved it.

Good things come to those who wait, is an old proverb my parents told me. If this is any indication of the good things that are in store for Compton, wait I will.

New Beginnings

The first day of this website launches less than a week before the opening of the highly anticipated Gateway Towne Center's Target. It's been a long time coming for residents of Compton who have lived through the many faces Compton has shown over the years. Comptonians have been anxiously awaiting the opening of our newest and best shopping center. To accompany Target, Best Buy, and Home Depot, there will be, Shoe Pavilion, Marshall's, 24 Hour Fitness, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, McDonald's, Jamba Juice, Panda Express, Staples, Daniel's Jewelers, Sally Beauty Supply, and possibly, T.G.I. Fridays. Although, T.G.I. Fridays has not been confirmed as a definite installment as of yet.

Compton has been longing for stores such as these for some time now. Before, residents of Compton would have to drive to local cities such as Lakewood, Long Beach, Carson, Downey, and others to satisfy such shopping needs.

Another great facet of the Gateway Towne Center is the hundreds of jobs it creates for the citizens of Compton. It's a known fact that people spend money near their jobs. Lunch time being a prime example. Also purchases such as gas and other spur of the moment purchases will add to the sales tax revenues the city receives. As long as we are able to keep this shopping center respectable, it will also bring more businesses to the city, as well as increase entrepreneurship.

I recommend that anyone who has time, come and support the grand opening of this new chapter in the city of Compton. Although this is a giant step forward, it is but a small indication of what Compton can achieve.
